On December 10th, after passionate exchanges, our fifteen jurors chose Ilios Kotsou's Praise of Lucidity

, best essay 2015 to better live his life.

Christilla Pellé-Douël The man is like his price: warm, happy, smiling. And so glad that his essay was crowned! Not surprisingly, the majority of jurors chose The Glory of Lucidity

because this book gives you energy. And goes against the mainstream of the prevailing ideas of the moment. Ignoring the obligation to happiness in all circumstances (which has the effect of plunging us into discomfort), Ilios Kotsou proclaims: "No, we can not be all positive!" What a relief! We do not have to find happiness, he explains, and we are not in debt for existence if we are unhappy. By accepting it, we avoid falling into the pitfalls of overconsumption society - to be happy, possess - and the ideology of self-realization at all costs. The lucidity, defended by Ilios, is this ability to see the world and to see ourselves as we are: imperfect, hesitant and dependent on each other. This is how, by seizing the moment, we will manage to meet the happiness

Why the author wrote this book

Psychologies: How did you come up with the idea of this book? Ilios Kotsou:

During conferences and internships, I met people present to life, to joy, despite great difficulties. I have studied the effects of emotions on our life, our health. A peculiarity struck me: the quest for happiness takes us away from self-fulfillment. Happiness is not a goal, it is an ability. And the idea of the book came to me as well.

You seem very happy. Because you are lucid? Ilios Kotsou:

Maybe ... But for me, happiness is the way of walking on the path of life, not its destination, which can be difficult. I lost my parents at the age of 16 and 17, my father committed suicide a few months after my mother's death. My mother left me with a very positive vision of life, and I also made decisive encounters, like that of a doctor who gave me to read a book each month and which we were discussing. From the library before the hour! That's how I discovered the Palo Alto school, positive psychology ... it all guided my life.

With your partner, you have created an association, Emergences. Social life contributes to our fulfillment?

Of course! Emergences organizes each year a conference on these issues of well-being, meaning, with guests such as Frans de Waal, Alexandre Jollien, Thierry Janssen ... The recipes finance different projects, such as Samusocial Brussels or a maternity in Benin. Our happiness is not separated from others. He is nourished. We bring our share of the hummingbird, as Pierre Rabhi says.
